It’s been a long while since the world was introduced to highlighting as a makeup trend. Illuminating your best facial features with a stroke of a brush quickly became a staple in every woman’s beauty routine and, as of recently, the trend has moved far beyond the face and into salon chairs.
Never heard of strobing as a highlighting technique for hair? We tapped Brooke Evans, L’Oréal Professionnel artist and brand ambassador, to share everything there is to know about the trend and why she feels it will be a salon favorite for years to come.
What is the strobing highlighting technique?
If we had to award the most sought-after hair coloring technique, highlights would surely take the cake. Long seen as the most effective way to add dimension to dull strands, a full set of blonde highlights has remained a favorite service of salon-goers. Unlike traditional highlights that are placed uniformly throughout the hair, Evans says strobing is a more organic way of accentuating your features that can be customized for each client.
To create the strobe effect, your stylist will use a painting, balayage, or foilayage method to apply the color to your strands depending on your desired look. If you’re looking to dazzle with the lightest and brightest effect possible, your stylist will use foils or hair painting. For a softer appearance, a balayage technique will work best.
Evan loves the trend because it gives the ability to create a unique look for each client.
“I love the strobing trend because of its versatility, artistic freedom, and customizable applications. This is a trend that is going to be hot for a long time,” Evans says.
Who should try strobing?
Since everyone’s hair is different, trends that work for every type and texture may seem impossible to come by. Unlike vibrant fashion colors that require serious upkeep and consistent trips to the salon, Evans believes strobing is doable for any head of hair.
“[Strobing] can be applied to a single process, as a face frame pop, as a surface paint, or hair painted throughout. Evans says, calling the trend “low maintenance and so very eye-catching.”
As always, we recommend booking a consultation with your stylist if you’re unsure about making a change to your color.
