How To Get Beach Wavy Hair Without A Beach In Sight

Whether you’re a beach bum or not, you can still get that ocean-kissed beach wave effect in your hair—even if you don’t live anywhere near a coastline! Jeremy Taylor, L'Oréal Professionnel brand ambassador, is based in sunny Newport Beach, California, making him the best pro to look to for advice on how to perfect beach wavy hair.

Taylor explains that unlike most styles, beach wavy hair looks better as the hours go by. Contrary to the image “beach waves” might conjure up for us, this style isn’t reserved just for blondes!

Head to the salon and ask your colorist for lived-in hair color (yes, they can make it look like you didn’t just walk out of the salon) with a brunette or dirty blonde shade. You may even want natural babylights that will enhance the carefree look of your beachy waves.

“Living in southern California, perfecting the beach wave style is a must,” Taylor says.

Pining for this disheveled beauty but don’t know where to start? You’re in luck. Taylor has formulated a foolproof method for creating flawless beach wavy hair every time. Here’s his expert-approved routine.

Prep your hair with primer.

“I usually start off by amplifying the hair with L'Oréal Professionnel’s Densité primer spray from the Tecni.Art collection,” he says.

Apply the thickening primer spray on damp hair before blow drying and let the formula do all the work.

Get creative with your iron.

Whether you’re using a curling iron or flat iron, Taylor says it’s all about alternating your technique.

“I like to alternate waving the hair forwards and backwards while maintaining the iron in a vertical position throughout the process,” he says. “I always leave about an inch to an inch-and-a-half off the end of the hair out so that I have a wave, not a curl.”

Texturize your waves.

“Last but not least, I break up the waves,” Taylor tells us.

He prefers to use products from L'Oréal Professionnel’s Tecni.Art range. To put the finishing touches on his waves, he loves to use the Wild Stylers Next Day Hair dry finishing spray, which gives the hair an imperfect next-day look.

If you want the final look to be more messy chic, opt for the Beach Waves texturizing salt water hair spray. When sculpting more defined, piece-y bits into your waves, the Lumi-Contrôle hair is the perfect product to use. Keep your beach wavy hair alive for longer using the Fresh Dust texturizing dry shampoo as the days tick by. If cared for correctly, those later days are when your beach waves really thrive!
